Movie Review: 21
Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 9:57 PM

I caught 21 just last saturday and didn't really have a time to write a review till now. Sorry for the delay.

21 is based on a real life story and features a group of students from MIT who collaborates with their maths professor to cheat at the classic game of Blackjack, thus the title 21. The students cheat in the game of blackjack by counting cards and using a slightly complex system of signals to communicate with each other in the casino to prevent themselves from getting caught counting cards. The whole story revolves around Ben Campbell, played by Jim Sturgess, who is a genius at maths aspiring to attend the Harvard School of Medicine.

Life is cruel and Ben has to pay $300 000 to go to Medical School but Ben can't afford it because his father died when he was young and his mum can't afford to pay for his education. Ben is then tempted by the alluring reward of winning at the casino when a group of students who were already in this business, led by their math professor, approached him. Following that, an interesting twist of events ensue in Sin City, Vegas as Ben takes up the offer.

21 runs for approximately 2 hours and is a rather interesting movie in my opinion. It gives a rather interesting insight into gambling, given the perspective that it was filmed from. The interesting plot line and unexpected twist of fate makes the movie rather enjoyable.
